CADER Partners with YMCA Chicago to Offer Training in Aging and Disability
After noticing its older adult members had an increased need for support, YMCA Chicago partnered with the Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER) at BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) to offer CADER’s three-course Foundations in Aging & Disabilities Certificate to their staff. Although the staff members encountered older adults frequently in their work, many had not received prior training in working with this population.
“The YMCA serves many aging adults, and it’s imperative that we have the best understanding of those that we serve,” one learner said. “Having a deeper understanding of the aging population, helps the YMCA do its best to meet their needs.”
The certificate program provided the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to support older adults and individuals living with disabilities, including important information on key issues, best practices in assessment, and strategies for navigating complex service systems.
Across two cohorts, a total of 30 YMCA Chicago learners completed the certificate program. Learners rated their skill level on key course competencies before and after each of the three courses. Participants saw large increases in many competencies by up to 291%. For example, for cohort 1, learners showed a 154% increase in their ability to make referrals to appropriate community-based services and programs.
“We have a large senior population, so after taking this course I feel better equipped to support them,” one learner said. “I know how to speak with them to evaluate their needs and offer resources to help support them.”
After completing the certificate, learners were asked how they intended to implement what they learned. Many learners stated that they intend to add programming that is specifically tailored towards older adults. Other learners noted the importance of partnering with local organizations that can offer additional resources and supports to older adults.
“Understanding the individual needs of those we serve daily and identifying local community partners to best serve our consumers will help our consumers to feel seen and cared for,” a learner said.
“The partnership between CADER and the YMCA has demonstrated a proven, scalable approach to meet the needs of a growing older-adult membership. By investing in targeted staff training and establishing YMCA sites as community navigation hubs, the YMCA can expand access to services, deepen community impact, and lead the nation in delivering age-friendly community supports.”, said Bronwyn Keefe, CADER director.
