May 7th: Beyond Racism Denial: Forms, Tactics, and Response Strategies

We cannot effectively address racism if we deny its existence. Racism denial refers to efforts to obscure the reality of racism or minimize its significance. This workshop introduces social service professionals to eight forms of racism denial and the tactics associated with them. Participants will learn practical strategies to recognize and respond to racism denial in professional, clinical, and organizational setting.

This training is appropriate for professionals at the beginner or intermediate level of racial justice practice. It develops foundational knowledge while strengthening practical applicable skills. This workshop is good for those who are starting out in racial justice practice or those with more experience who are looking to enhance their skills with new models or frameworks. Participants will leave with tools they can use to identify racism denial and respond more effectively.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Phillipe Copeland is a public scholar, educator, trainer, facilitator, and consultant. Dr. Copeland’s areas of expertise include antiracist education and practice, antiracism through culture and narratives, trauma and violence, and health equity. Original work includes developing an interdisciplinary model of competency-based, antiracist education, a model for identifying and responding to racism denial, and a test for assessing how antiracist a film or television show is. Dr. Copeland’s work has been featured in The Daily Beast, The Boston Globe, and Word in Black, The Hill, and GOOD, as well as numerous news, radio and television interviews.

Objectives

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to recall the eight forms of racism denial and their associated tactics.
  2. Participants will be able to give examples of racism denial from their own experiences.
  3. Participants will determine what form(s) racism denial are represented by different scenarios.
  4. Participants will comprehend different strategies for responding to racism denial.”
